Janka Hardness Scale

One of the best methods to measure the ability of a wood species to withstand denting and wear is the Janka Hardness scale. Janka Hardness is used to compare the relative hardness of various species and represents the pounds of pressure required to embed a 0.444 inch (11.28 mm) diameter steel ball into wood to half its diameter. The higher the number, the harder the wood. The Janka Hardness Scale is also a good indicator of how hard or easy a species is to saw or nail. The scale is only one component in assessing the durability of your floor. Type of cut, density of cell structure, construction, and finish also play a role in determining the long term durability of your floor.
